Dairy Queen vs. Sonic Slush Prices: Sonic’s Happy Hour Changes Everything
DRINKS SHOWDOWN. REAL PRICING RESEARCH
Sonic runs almost entirely on drinks. Slushes, shakes, limeades, over a dozen flavors in five sizes each. Dairy Queen’s drink menu is smaller and built more around one Misty Slush option than a full lineup of sizes. I priced both out to see what that size difference actually costs, or saves, depending on which way you look at it.
Quick note before the numbers: Sonic and Dairy Queen are both largely franchise operated, so these are national averages. I also want to flag upfront that Sonic’s shake pricing was noticeably less consistent across the sources I checked than the Slush pricing was. I’m treating the shake numbers below as rougher estimates than the Slush comparison, and I’d rather say that plainly than present shaky numbers as if they were solid.
Sonic’s Slush sizes, and where DQ actually lands
| Sonic Cherry Slush | Price | Calories | Cost per 100 cal |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mini | $1.99 | 130 | $1.53 |
| Small | $2.99 | 200 | $1.50 |
| Medium | $3.49 | 280 | $1.25 |
| Large | $3.99 | 440 | $0.91 |
| RT 44 | $4.39 | 610 | $0.72 |
Dairy Queen’s Misty Slush is one size, priced at $2.99 for 200 calories. When I lined that up against Sonic’s sizes, it landed exactly on top of Sonic’s Small, same price, same calorie count, same cost per 100 calories to three decimal places. That’s not a coincidence I expected going in. I checked the math twice because it seemed too clean, and it held up both times.
The real difference is that Sonic offers four more sizes
DQ ties Sonic at the Small size exactly. What DQ doesn’t have is anywhere to go from there. Sonic’s Large and RT 44 sizes both beat DQ’s only slush option by a wide margin on cost per calorie, down to 72 cents per 100 calories at the RT 44 size versus $1.50 for DQ’s Misty Slush. If you want more slush than DQ’s single size gives you, Sonic is the only one of the two that can actually sell it to you, and the larger sizes come at a noticeably better rate too.
This isn’t really a case of one chain beating the other on the same product. It’s that DQ built its Slush as a single fixed offering while Sonic built an entire size ladder around the category. If a small, quick slush is all you want, the two are functionally identical in price and value. If you want to scale up, only one of them has that option.
I almost missed the biggest factor in this whole comparison
Sonic runs a daily Happy Hour, roughly 2 to 4 PM and again from 8 PM until close at most locations, with drinks and slushes at about half off. I checked this against nine separate sources before including it here, since a discount this large changes the entire comparison if it’s real, and it held up consistently across all of them. Some sources also note that ordering through the Sonic app extends the same discount all day, not just during the two afternoon windows.
Once Happy Hour pricing applies, Sonic isn’t just tying DQ anymore. A Large Slush at half price runs about $2.00 for 440 calories, which comes out to $0.45 per 100 calories, roughly a third of what DQ’s Misty Slush costs at $1.50 per 100 calories. Even Sonic’s Small during Happy Hour, at roughly $1.50, undercuts DQ’s only slush size outright while matching it on calories.
DQ doesn’t have an equivalent standing discount window for its Misty Slush that I’m aware of. Its closest comparable deal is the BOGO 99 cent Blizzard promotion I’ve covered elsewhere on this site, which applies to Blizzards specifically, not the Slush. If timing an order around Sonic’s Happy Hour is realistic for you, that’s a bigger factor than anything in the regular-price comparison above.
Shakes are close on price, less certain on calories
DQ’s medium shakes run $3.99 across all three flavors (chocolate, vanilla, strawberry), landing between 560 and 590 calories depending on flavor. The Sonic shake pricing I found put a medium in a similar range, somewhere around $4.49 for a classic flavor, though the calorie figures I found for Sonic’s shakes varied enough between sources that I don’t want to state a specific number with the same confidence as the Slush data above. On price alone, the two chains are close enough at the medium shake size that I wouldn’t call either one a clear winner without better calorie data to compare against.
What I’d actually do with this
- Biggest lever by far: timing. During Sonic’s Happy Hour (roughly 2 to 4 PM or 8 PM to close), Sonic beats DQ’s Slush outright at every size, not just ties it.
- Outside Happy Hour, quick small slush: DQ and Sonic are priced and sized identically, so pick whichever is closer.
- Want a bigger slush at regular price: Sonic, since DQ doesn’t sell a larger size at any price.
- Shakes: close enough on price that I’d pick based on flavor preference rather than value, given the calorie data I have isn’t solid enough to call a winner.
Frequently asked questions
Is Dairy Queen or Sonic cheaper for a slush?
At regular price, they’re identical at the size DQ actually offers. DQ’s single Misty Slush size matches Sonic’s Small exactly on price ($2.99), calories (200), and cost per 100 calories. During Sonic’s Happy Hour, roughly 2 to 4 PM and 8 PM to close daily, Sonic drops to about half price and becomes clearly cheaper than DQ at every size.
What time is Sonic Happy Hour?
Most locations run it daily from about 2 PM to 4 PM, with a second window from 8 PM until close. Drinks and slushes run roughly half off during those times, and ordering through the Sonic app may extend the discount all day at some locations.
Does Dairy Queen have different slush sizes like Sonic?
No. Dairy Queen sells one Misty Slush size. Sonic sells five, from Mini up to the RT 44, giving it a size range DQ doesn’t match.
Are Dairy Queen or Sonic shakes a better deal?
Close enough on price that I wouldn’t call it either way. Medium shakes at both chains land in a similar $4 range, but I found the calorie data for Sonic’s shakes too inconsistent across sources to confidently compare cost per calorie the way I did for the Slush lineup.
