Dairy Queen Nutrition Facts: Complete Calorie and Macro Guide

NUTRITION FACTS. THE FULL MACRO PICTURE, NOT JUST CALORIES

I already have a post ranking every item lightest to heaviest by calories. This one is different on purpose: it’s about the full nutrition picture, protein, carbs, fat, and sugar, averaged across every category on the menu, not just a calorie leaderboard. If you want the item-by-item calorie ranking specifically, that post covers it. This one is for figuring out which parts of the menu are actually protein-heavy, sugar-heavy, or neither.

These are category averages, not any single item, but the pattern across them is worth sitting with for a second. Tex-Mex and Chicken Strip Baskets are the two most protein-dense categories on the entire menu, both around 43-44 grams on average. Chicken Strip Baskets also carries the highest average calorie count of anything DQ sells, 1,083, which I found genuinely surprising the first time I ran these numbers for the calories post, a fried chicken basket outweighs every dessert category on the board.

Worth being upfront about how these are calculated, since DQ doesn’t publish a single, standardized macro sheet across its whole menu the way a few individual items get listed. I built these using calorie data for every item, then applied macro ratios typical for that category of food, fried protein items skew toward protein and fat, blended sugary drinks skew toward carbs and sugar, and so on. That’s a reasonable estimate, not a lab-tested number, and it’s why I’m presenting these as category averages rather than claiming exact precision down to the gram for any single item.

Dairy Queen chicken strip basket with fries, the highest average calorie category on the menu
Chicken Strip Baskets average more calories than any dessert category on the menu, protein-dense too.

Where the sugar actually is

Drinks stand alone here, averaging 90 grams of sugar per item, more than any other category by a wide margin. That’s slushes, shakes, and MooLattes pulling the average up, not an outlier item skewing things. Blizzard Treats come in second at 56 grams, with Classic Treats and DQ Cakes tied around 31 grams each. On the low end, Snacks & Sides average just 2 grams of sugar, which makes sense given that category is mostly fries and other savory sides rather than anything sweet.

Where the protein actually is

If protein is what you’re optimizing for, Tex-Mex and Chicken Strip Baskets are the two categories actually built for that, both averaging over 40 grams. Salads land third at 36 grams, which surprised me less than the chicken basket calorie count, but is still worth knowing if you assumed a salad here would be the lighter, lower-protein choice by default. On the other end, Drinks, DQ Cakes, and Snacks & Sides all average under 7 grams of protein, which tracks, none of those categories are built around protein in the first place.

Slush calories, and a naming mix-up worth clearing up

Misty Slush, DQ’s actual slush product, runs about 200 calories at the standard size, essentially all of it from sugar and carbs rather than fat or protein, consistent with the Drinks category pattern above. While researching this, I also checked into “DQ Freeze,” since that term shows up in some searches. It isn’t a current drink on DQ’s menu as far as I can confirm. What I found instead is the “DQ FREEZER,” a promotional concept where DQ re-releases discontinued Blizzard flavors from its past catalog, not a beverage at all. If you were looking for a “Freeze” drink specifically, Misty Slush is almost certainly the item actually being searched for.

What this means depending on what you’re after

  • Highest protein per item: Tex-Mex Menu and Chicken Strip Baskets, both averaging 43-44 grams.
  • Lowest sugar: Snacks & Sides, averaging just 2 grams.
  • Highest sugar, by far: Drinks, averaging 90 grams, more than any dessert category.
  • Heaviest category overall: Chicken Strip Baskets, averaging 1,083 calories, more than any Blizzard or cake category.

Frequently asked questions

What is the highest protein item at Dairy Queen?

By category average, Tex-Mex Menu items and Chicken Strip Baskets both lead the menu at 43-44 grams of protein, well ahead of Salads at 36 grams.

What Dairy Queen items have the most sugar?

Drinks as a category average 90 grams of sugar per item, more than any other category on the menu, including desserts. Blizzard Treats come in second at 56 grams.

Does Dairy Queen have a drink called DQ Freeze?

Not as a current menu item, as far as I can confirm. The closest real match is Misty Slush. Separately, “DQ FREEZER” is a promotional concept for re-releasing old, discontinued Blizzard flavors, not a drink at all, and is likely what some searches for “Freeze” are actually referring to.
